Weaning from the bottle

|
For many months, I've been anxiously anticipating the day when Ellie could drink cow's milk. Our situation has been a little unique. Ellie never latched properly due to Ellie's stay in the NICU so I've been pumping 5 times a day for over a year!

Our schedule was so busy the few weeks prior to her birthday, that I didn't even have time to think about how to go about weaning. Without giving it too much thought, I simply gave her some whole milk in a sippy cup with her breakfast on her birthday. She took a sip, shook her head, and pushed away the cup. Nope, she didn't like it. She had been drinking water from her sippy cup for months, so I knew that the cup wasn't the problem. She simply didn't want to drink the milk from the cup.

There's unfortunately very little information online regarding weaning from the bottle. I always thought that the bottle was simply a vehicle for babies to drink their milk, but now I realize that Ellie might actually be attached to her bottle!?! So, I'm now faced with a two phased challenge:
1) Getting Ellie to drink cow's milk
2) Getting Ellie to drink cow's milk from her sippy cup

Based upon some friend's recommendation, I decided to slowly introduce cow's milk into her bottle, upping the ratio every 3-4 days. We're now at 50% cow and 50% mommy milk and she hasn't rejected her bottle yet. Phew!

I have also been working on getting her to drink other liquids from her sippy cup. Every meal, I offer her two cups, one with water and the other with a different drink - juice, milk, chocolate milk. Every time she drinks from the non-water cup, I cheer and clap for her. She enjoys the cheering so much that she'll fake drink from the juice cup and start clapping for herself! So deceiving and so cute! To get the point across, I've even started drinking milk or juice from a sippy cup myself! Yesterday, she finally started drinking apple juice from her sippy cup. Now we just have to work on the cow's milk.
